Biography

The son of Guillaume de Lalen , and Jeanne de Creki, the younger brother of the famous tournament fighter “Good Knight” Jacques de Lalen .

He received a name in honor of his godfather, Duke Philip III of Burgundy.

First mentioned in connection with the struggle against the rebelled Ghents . He was knighted by Jean of Burgundy , Earl of Etampes, in April 1452 before attacking the battlefield near Audenard . On May 18, while passing by Lokeren, his older brother saved his life by tearing him out of the hands of the enemy. On December 2, during an outing from Audenard, he was ambushed, and was again saved by Jacques de Lalen.

The "Good Knight", who died in the Ghent War, bequeathed his property to his younger brother, for the war against the infidels. On July 17, 1453, the Duke of Burgundy appointed Philip his chamberlain to replace Jacques. The war ended a few days later, and Lalen distinguished himself in cavalry attacks in the general battle of Haver on July 23.

On February 17, 1454, Philippe de Lalen participated in the "pheasant feast" given by the Duke of Lille . The feast was preceded by a padarm, organized by Prince Adolf Klewski (“Knight of the Swan”), where the main prize was a magnificent golden swan. Lalen participated in this contest along with other nobles. He was one of the 12 knights who, with the same number of ladies and damoiselles, played mysteries and farces during the feast.

Olivier de Lamarsch is mentioned among the 22 knights who took the pheasant oath after the duke.

On August 17, 1458, Lalen arranged a seven-page jostra in Lille with spears against all who came, in honor of the Countess d'E and de Nevers.

He participated in the coronation of Louis XI in Reims on August 14, 1461, and then in the solemn accession of the king to Paris on August 31.

In 1463, the Duke of Burgundy ordered to organize celebrations in Bruges on the occasion of the arrival of his sister, the Dowager Duchess of Bourbon , and her two daughters. Philippe de Lalen, who dreamed of repeating the achievements of his older brother on the Padarme Source of Tears, obtained permission to conduct a similar event.

The Padarm, called the “Porch of the Fairies” ( Perronfée ), opened on April 28, 1463, and lasted 12 days. According to the plot, on the indicated porch as a captive of a certain powerful noble lady, who gave orders through a dwarf, a noble knight was kept. The tournament consisted of three parts:

  1. Departures ( les courses ) with a spear and a sword, for four days, during which Philippe de Lalen fought against 24 lecturers ( les jouteurs )
  2. Trips with a spear in military equestrian equipment ( les courses de lance en harnais de guerre ), also for four days, against 20 opponents
  3. Horse riding trips for the dzhostr ( les courses en harnais de joute ), for another four days, against 20 seniors, among whom was Count de Charolais

The list of knights with whom Lalen competed consists of 45 names, among which were Adolph of Cleves, Simon VIII de Lalen , Joss de Lalen , Jean and Jacques de Luxembourg, Philippe de Bourbon, Gilles de Berlemont, Senor de Conde, Guillaume de Lin, Count de Brienne , Jean de Trazigny, Viscount de Furne, Eberhard von Cerclas, and others.

Four versions of the padarma description have been preserved, the most spectacular of which was published in the XIV volume of Souvenirs de la Flandre-wallonne in Douai in 1874.

According to the author of the article in the Belgian National Biography, thanks to Fairy's Porch Philippe de Lalen managed to rise to the level of his older brother.

According to Georges Châteletin , in 1464, Philippe de Lalen tried to fulfill a crusade vow and took part in the expedition of the great bastard Antoine of Burgundy , which was interrupted in Marseilles due to the outbreak of the plague.

As part of the troops of the Count de Charolais, Lalen took part in the War of the League of the Public Good . According to Philippe de Commin , he was the most famous among the young Burgundian knights, and came “from a clan that gave many distinguished valor and courage to the knights who almost all died in wars for their seniors” [1] [K 1] .

At the Battle of Monlery, Philippe de Lalen, among several selected knights and squires, was ordered to dismount to protect the archers, and he died in battle [2] .

Philip was not married, but had several bastards, one of which, Meliador, in 1489-1499 was the douai bali.
