Biography
Family and Education
He came from the Saxon family Ewald ; his parents Friedrich (1785-1840) and Louise Ewald left for Russia in the early 1820s. There were five sons in the family: the older brothers Fedor (1813–1879), Konstantin (1816–?), Vladimir (1823–1891) and Peter (1826–1894).
He received his secondary education at the 3rd St. Petersburg Gymnasium , after which he entered the Main Pedagogical Institute , which he graduated in 1853.
Activities
In July 1853, he was appointed senior teacher of the Russian language at the Polotsk noble school .
In September 1856 , he was transferred to the post of teacher of accounting and paperwork at the St. Petersburg Vvedensky district school.
In St. Petersburg, E. Ewald soon gained fame as a good teacher and began to teach in many educational institutions of the capital. So, from October 1856 he taught Russian language and literature at the auditing school of the military department (later the Alexander Military Law Academy ), from February 1857 to July 1862 - at the 5th classical gymnasium , from December 1858 to April 1859 - in Elizabethan school .
Then he taught at the Nikolaev School of Guard Lieutenants and Cavalry Junkers , at the Pavlovsk Institute, at the Page of His Imperial Majesty the Corps , at the Imperial Academy of Arts , at the Military Law Academy and other educational institutions.
In addition, from 1860 to 1868 he taught Russian to Emperor Alexander III , Grand Dukes Alexei , Sergey and Vladimir Alexandrovich , as well as Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna , for which in 1861, 1863, 1866, 1867 and 1868. was granted valuable gifts from the cabinet of His Imperial Majesty.
In addition to all the above classes, E. Ewald from 1862 was still an official of special assignments at the Main Directorate of military educational institutions, and since October of the same year - a member of a special committee for the transformation of military educational institutions.
In 1870 , he was appointed inspector of the Mariinsky Gymnasium , and from the following year he was at the IV department of His Imperial Majesty's Chancellery at the disposal of the head of the St. Petersburg Gymnasium.
In 1877 he took the position of clerk of the Ministry of War Office, and in 1878 he was appointed a member of the main prison committee.
In the early 1880s, E. Ewald retired and became a teacher-educator of children P.G. von Derviz , in whose family he constantly lived abroad.
For his many years of pedagogical activity, in addition to gifts from the emperor’s office, he was also granted three pensions and the Order of St. Vladimir of the 3rd degree, as well as the rank of a real state adviser.
In the educational literature, E. Ewald is known for his articles on Russian literature.
Death
He died on March 24, 1892 at the age of 59 years.
