Forsyth, Wesley Octavius

Wesley Octavius ​​Forsyth ( English Wesley Octavius ​​Forsyth ; January 26, 1859 - May 7, 1937 , Toronto ) - Canadian pianist, composer and music teacher.

He studied music in Toronto with Edward Fisher , then in 1886-1889. at the Leipzig Conservatory with Bruno Zwincher , Martin Krause and Adolf Ruthardt (piano), as well as Richard Hoffmann (orchestrated), Robert Papperitz (organ) and Salomon Jadasson (composition, harmony, counterpoint). Later, in 1892, he again traveled to Europe to improve as a pianist and teacher with Julius Epstein . Upon returning to Canada, he taught in Toronto, then in 1891-1893. in Hamilton , after which he returned to Toronto. In 1893-1894 and from 1924 until the end of his life he taught at the Toronto Conservatory , the rest of the time at other educational institutions, including in 1895-1912. He headed the Metropolitan Music School.

In his student years, he began to compose. The Romance for Orchestra (1888), which belongs to Suite E mi, which, apparently, was never completed, was repeatedly performed, but Forsyth's later works were mostly written for piano solos. He gave concerts infrequently and mainly with his own compositions. The greatest contribution made to the training of several generations of Canadian pianists.

Since 1968, memorial scholarships of W. O. Forsythe have been awarded at the University of Toronto .
