Biography
Joseph Hoffmann was born on July 22, 1831 in the city of Vienna [4] .
He received his first drawing lessons as a child, and then studied with Karl Rahl . Hoffmann repeatedly made trips with an artistic purpose to different countries; visited Slavic lands, Tyrol , Styria , Italy and Greece ; from 1858 to 1864 he worked in Rome [5] .
The fruit of these journeys was a series of majestic idealized landscapes painted by Joseph Hoffmann, for example, “The Remains of the Aphrodite Sanctuary on the Way to Eleusis”, “Athens from the Time of Pericles,” five types of ancient Athens (performed for bar. Zina) and the picture “The Minute of Death at Calvary” (1882) [5] .
In addition to these works, he was also famous for the scenery written for the Vienna Opera and for the Wagner Theater in Bayreuth [5] .
He was married to the writer Nina Hoffmann (née Matscheko; 1844-1914).
Joseph Hoffmann died on January 31, 1904 in his hometown.
