History
The museum, founded in 1787, during the Enlightenment , is one of the oldest museums in France. The decree on the creation of the museum was signed on November 30, 1787. Initially, the museum exhibited a collection of the art school of François Devosge, created back in 1767. The main goal of the museum was to help novice artists by providing them with models for copying. After the French Revolution, the museum grew rapidly, Francois Devoges remained its director until his death in 1811.
The museum was damaged during the Second World War, as a result of the German occupation of France , some of the exhibits were evacuated, others were hidden in the basements.
From 2006 to 2019, the museum is being reconstructed in several stages.
