Whedon, George

George Whedon (born July 3, 1920 ) is a former British gymnast . He took part in competitions in gymnastics at the two Summer Olympics . In 1948 in London, he participated in the men's individual all-around, in team all-around, floor exercises, exercises on horseback, vault, parallel bars, crossbar, rings, horse. It was the 12th in the team competition, and not higher than the 38th in the individual competitions. In 1952 in Helsinki, he performed on the same projectiles, taking 21st place in the team tournament and not higher than the 116th in individual competitions [2] . His friend was gymnast Frank Turner [3] .

Biography

Weedon was born on July 3, 1920 in Richmond, London . Engaged in gymnastics at the sports club of the University of Westminster - Regent Street Polytechnic Gymnastics Club [2] . His wife was the British gymnast Joan Airey, who also participated in the Olympics, his grandfather Lindsay Wiedon was a British pentathlete [4] . Before and after retiring from active sports, Whedon taught physical education at various schools, including from 1950 to 1971 at the John Lyon School, Middlesex [5] .

In 2010, in an interview with the BBC company , he spoke about his participation in the 1948 Olympics and about preparations for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. According to him, the city was not prepared properly for the Games due to poor infrastructure [3] . In 2011, Kate Sullivan directed a short film, Tall Tall, about him. On July 11, 2012, he was a torchbearer during the torch relay of the 2012 Summer Olympics [6] .
