Meta Elste Neumann ( October 16, 1919 - October 30, 2010 ) [2] [3] is a former US gymnast. Born in Bremen , Germany . As part of the US women's gymnastics team, she participated in competitions at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London , Great Britain and at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki , Finland [4] .

Biography
Elste was three years old when her parents emigrated from Germany and settled in Chicago . There she did gymnastics at Lincoln Turner Hall. Studied at Lake View High School (Chicago). After the father suffered from a stroke, her family lost their livelihood and Elste had to leave school at age 14 and go to earn money for her family. Gymnastic skills come in handy in her work in a traveling circus.
At the same time, Elste continued to do gymnastics. Her dreams of participating in the Olympics were stifled by World War II. The Olympic Games in 1940 and 1944 were canceled. But she was well prepared for the Olympics in 1948 and 1952.
At the 1948 Summer Olympics, she won the Olympic bronze medal with the US team.
At the gymnastics competitions of the American Amateur Athletics Union (AAU) in 1947, she was the first in uneven bars, the first in 1949 in floor exercises, the first in 1952 in exercises on a log. Nine times elected by the American Amateur Athletics Union to the symbolic team of the best gymnasts in the USA
