Biography
Ingemar Hedberg was born on March 8, 1920 in the city of Orebro . Carried away by kayaking and canoeing, he trained in Stockholm , was a member of the capital's sports club Brunnsvikens.
He achieved his first serious success at the adult international level in the 1950 season, when he joined the main team of the Swedish national team and attended the World Cup in Copenhagen, where he won all three disciplines in which he participated: in the relay 4 × 500 meters together with rowers such as Lars Glasser , Lennart Klingström and Geert Fredriksson , also in double kayaks at distances of 500 and 1000 meters paired with Lars Glasser.
Thanks to a series of successful performances, Hedberg won the right to defend the honor of the country at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki . Started here with the same teammate Lars Glasser in the program of double kayaks at a distance of 1000 meters - from the first place he qualified at the preliminary stage, however, in the decisive final race he could not overtake the Finnish crew of Kurt Vires and Yurie Hietanen , eventually winning the silver Olympic medal (Swedes and the Finns crossed the finish line almost simultaneously, showing a lonely time of 3: 51.1, and the winner had to be determined using the photo finish ). Soon after the end of these competitions, Ingemar Hedberg decided to end his career as a professional athlete, giving way to young Swedish rowers in the national team [3] .
