The National Assembly , or the National Assembly , ( Fr. Assemblée nationale ) of Gabon is the lower house of the Gabon Parliament , while the upper house is the Senate .

The assembly consists of 120 deputies elected for 5 years. 111 deputies are elected during direct general elections in single-member districts, and the 9 remaining deputies are appointed by the president .
History
Gabon gained independence from France on August 17, 1960. On August 23 of the same year, the country became a member of the UN . The Constitution of Gabon was adopted on November 4, 1960. In accordance with the Constitution, the President and the National Assembly were elected for 7 years by direct voting on the basis of universal suffrage. The National Assembly has the right to replace the President of the Republic under certain conditions in case of violation of democratic principles.
The first National Assembly was elected during the 1961 general election . It included 49 deputies. The two main factions were the Gabon Democratic Bloc (BDG) and the Democratic and Socialist Union of Gabon (UDSG).
