Hetty Direnfurt wrote the book “Memsahb im Himalaja” with the subtitle “The Only White Woman in the 1930 Himalayan International Expedition” ( German Die einzige weiße Frau auf der internationalen Himalaja-Expedition von 1930 ) about her first participation in the Himalayas . The book was published in 1931 in Leipzig and, having become a bestseller, was reprinted several times [2] .
The site of the next Himalayan expedition of 1934, led by Gunther Oscar Direnfurt, was the mountain system of Karakorum . As part of the group, Hetty Direnfurt set a world record for women while climbing the western peak of Sia Kangri (7315 m), which she held for 20 years [3] [4] .
Norman Direnfurt , the son of Hetty and Gunther Oscar, who, following the example of his father, became a professor, mountaineer and expedition leader, as well as a filmmaker, recalls that when he was five years old (in 1923), the family moved to Salzburg , and later to Switzerland . In 1937, Hetty and Norman went to the United States to work there for some time as ski instructors and guides, but because of the outbreak of war in 1939, their plans to return to Europe were frustrated [3] .
Rewards
Hetty was the only woman to win the Olympic Mountaineering Prize , last played at the XI Summer Olympics in 1936 in Berlin . One gold medal for two was won by representatives of Switzerland - the married couple Hetty and Gunther Oscar Direnfurt [1] [5] [6] [7] [8] .
The Nazis were very unhappy with the award of the Direnfurt gold medal. Having Jewish roots and understanding the danger of the Nazis coming to power, the Direnfurt couple received Swiss citizenship in 1932 [9] [10] . In 1936, Hetty Direnfurt became the first Swiss to win the Olympic gold medal [4] [11] [12] .
