Biography
Alfred August Yohim was born on June 12, 1902 in Berlin. During his sports career, he won more championships before World War II than any other American gymnast. In 1925-1930 and 1933 he won six times in the absolute championship, winning at least one medal in each gymnastics exercise. In all, he won 35 medals at national championships, including winning seven floor runs in floor exercises.
He took part in competitions in gymnastics at the Olympic Games 1924 , 1928 , 1932, 1936 . His highest achievements were the silver medals of the 1932 Olympic Games in team competition and vault . In 1936, in Berlin, at his fourth Olympics, Yohim was chosen as the United States standard bearer at the opening ceremony of the games.
For a long time he worked at the New York Telephone Company, and popularized gymnastics in the USA. He was actively involved in the creation of the Swiss Gymnastics Club ( German: Swiss Turnverein ) in Hudson County, New Jersey, the most successful team in the history of US gymnastics. Yohim, having some artistic talent, illustrated the compulsory exercises for national publications.
