Administrative division of Marseille

Map of Marseille Municipal Districts

Marseille is one of the three French cities (along with Paris and Lyon ), divided into municipal districts or arrondismanes ( fr. Arrondissement [aʀɔ̃dismɑ̃])).

In 1946, Marseille was divided into 16 districts.

In 1965, the municipal districts of Marseille were grouped into 8 sectors (two districts per sector) in accordance with the law of July 9, 1987 [1] . Each sector has its own Council and its mayor, similar to the city structure (city council and city mayor), but to a large extent having (unlike the city level) consultative powers.

Office

At present, the administrative management of Marseille is carried out in accordance with the law (PML) No. 82-1169, adopted on December 31, 1982 and defining administrative management for three cities: Paris , Marseille and Lyon ).

In accordance with the PML law, Council members are elected during municipal elections. The first elected from each list are also members of the City Council, the rest are only members of the sectoral Council. At its first session, each sector council elects a sector mayor.

In each of the sectors, elections are held for members of the sectoral Council (a total of 303 in the whole city), of which one third are elected to the City Council and elect the mayor of Marseille:
