Sports career

Enrique Mayer, a native of Barcelona, made his debut at the 1923 Christmas Tournament in the Barcelona region of Touro, and in 1927 took part in his first international match (a friendly match between the Spanish and French national teams in Oviedo) [3] .

Mayer's main achievements in tennis are from the late 1920s to the mid-1930s. He was the permanent champion of Spain in singles from 1929 to 1935 - seven times in a row. With the exception of 1931, he also won the Spanish champion title in male pairs each time, and in 1929, 1931 and 1934 he also became the winner in the mixed double , thus securing the title of absolute champion of Spain [4] . Enrique won his last victory in the mixed doubles with his sister Isabel [3] . He also repeatedly won the championship of Catalonia, and in 1930 became the champion of Portugal [5] . From 1929 to 1936, he represented the Spanish national team in the Davis Cup .

At the Grand Slam tournaments, Meyer made it to the quarterfinals of the singles twice in the quarterfinals, including at the Wimbledon tournament in 1932 - after defeating the Frenchman Jean Borotra - one of the four “French musketeers” of tennis [5] . In the same year, he won the Wimbledon mixed doubles tournament, playing in tandem with the American Elizabeth Ryan , and three years later repeated this success at the US Championship with local tennis player Sarah Fabian . He achieved his best result in male couples in 1935, during his only performance at the Australian Championship, making his way to the semifinals [6] .

In addition to tennis, Meyer also successfully played golf, winning the championship of Spain among couples [3] .
