Biography

Portrait of Rymkevich

He graduated from the philological department of the University of Lodz . Criticism ranked him as "the generation of 1956." However, Rymkevich led an independent line, which he called classicism , but which more closely resembles modern neo- baroque (Rimkevich’s essays, which compiled the book What is Classicism (1967), which provoked a noisy polemic, are devoted to this aesthetics dating back to European and Polish baroque).

In the 1990s, he actively participated in public life, published on the pages of the popular “ Vyborchi Newspaper ”.

Rymkevich also acted as a playwright, translator of American, Spanish poetry and Russian poetry ( Eliot , Stevens , Spanish folk romances, Calderon , Lorca , Mandelstam ), and later as a novelist (Polish Talks in the Summer of 1983 (1984), translated into German and French). The author of thorough works on the Polish literature of the 19th century (first of all, on Mickiewicz ), prepared two fundamental encyclopedias devoted to the works of Lesmyan (2001) and Slovak (2004).
