Production
In March 2012, it was announced that the modern rethinking of the “Prisoner” was ordered by Foxtel . Brian Walsh, executive director of television at Foxtel, said Wentworth would not be a remake of "The Prisoner," which went with 692 episodes on Network Ten from 1979 to 1986. He continued: "Wentworth will be a dynamic and very interesting drama series designed and styled specifically for a subscribed television audience. We told the producers to push all boundaries and honestly portray life from the inside as it is in 2012." Lara Radulovic and David Hannam developed Wentworth from Reg Watson's original concept. FremantleMedia and drama director Joe Porter will produce Wentworth. The first episode and several subsequent episodes were written by Pete McTig . Television critic Michael Idato acted as a consultant on TV shows, and Kerry Tucker acted as a consultant on authenticity.
Joe Porter commented that the series will explore "the politics of women in a world with few men, and how experience challenges them and changes them, sometimes for the better." Wentworth is in the modern world and focuses on the early days of Bee Smith in prison. The storylines include a combination of original prisoners and Prisoner staff with characters designed specifically for Wentworth. Foxtel told a Sydney Morning Herald reporter that the original characters from The Prisoner would be a modern interpretation in the new series. Initially, it was reported that none of the original Prisoner roster would appear in Wentworth's first season, however Anne Charleston , who had several small roles in the original series, made a miniature appearance as Liz Birdwood, and Alex Menglet and Gloria Agenstat, who played Ray Proctor and Tammy Fisher in the original series will be guest characters in the new series. Foxtel said the producers watched how they could incorporate the musical tune "On The Inside" into new episodes.
On June 5, 2013, it was confirmed that Wentworth was extended for season 2. An Australian Associated Press reporter said production will begin later that year and the season will be released in 2014. Joe Porter said: "We have put together an extraordinary team of screenwriters who can't wait for season 2 to begin. We still have so many stories." In January 2014, it was announced that Wentworth's 3rd season was ordered before the second went on air. Similarly, the 12-episode 4th season was announced before the airing of the 3rd season on February 27, 2015. The 4th season was aired on May 10, 2016. Daniel Cormack confirmed that the 5th season was put into development on July 19th. The premiere of twelve episodes took place on April 4, 2017. On May 9, 2017, Fox Showcase announced that the series was extended for season 6, with a premiere on June 19, 2018. The seventh season was put into development in April 2018, before the premiere of the 6th season, with shootings starting next week and the premiere set for May 28, 2019. On December 5, 2018, it was confirmed that another 20 episodes were put into development, the production of which will begin in September 2019, and the episodes will be broadcast until 2020 and 2021.

After the end of the 1st season, it turned out that in the second season the cult character Joan "Frick" Ferguson , a sadist, a lesbian, a prison officer will be presented. Joe Porter commented: “The prisoner offered a very rich well of amazing characters, and Wentworth’s authors are very excited about the character revision of the prison officer Joan“ Frick ”Ferguson in our 2nd season.” Erin McUirther from TV Week reported that the former actress "All Saints" Tammy Mackintosh was one of the actresses who was rumored to be offered the role. On September 21, 2013, it was confirmed that Pamela Reib was selected for the role of Joan Ferguson . Production of the 4th season began in the second half of 2015. Season 5 was filmed in Melbourne in August 2016.
