Caparra ( lat. Capara or Capera) is an ancient Roman city ​​in the province of Lusitania . Located in Spain in the municipality of Oliva de Plasencia in the province of Cáceres , an autonomous region of Extremadura . Tetrapilon in the very center of the ancient city since 1931 has the status of an architectural monument.

Location

Caparra is located about 500 meters south of the Ambrose River on the so-called “ Silver Way ” (Via de la Plata), which passed from the south from Seville (Hispalis) through Merida (Emerita Augusta) and Salamanca (Helmantica) to the city Astorga (Asturica Augusta) in the north; the road had a branch towards the city of Idanha a Velha (Egitania), which is now located in Portugal, the cities of Coria (Caurium) and Talavera la Vieja (Augustobriga). Today, the place where the city of Caparra was located is part of the territory of the city of Plasencia .

History

Pliny the Elder mentions among the paying tribute to Rome the inhabitants of Lusitania, the Caperians, that is, it is believed [1] , the inhabitants of Caparra [2] . Under Emperor Nero , a mile pillar was installed in 58 . The heyday of the city dates back to the II - III centuries . Claudius Ptolemy (about 100-170 years) mentions Caparra as the habitat of the vetons .

Roman city

Terme and Tetrapilon

The city occupied an area of ​​15 or 16 hectares; it was surrounded by a stone wall (perhaps only in the 3rd century). Tetrapilon (the only surviving building) stood at the intersection of the main streets of the city - Cardo Maximus and Decumanus . Near the tetrapilon were the terms and forum, and the amphitheater was located outside the city wall. About 500 meters north of the tetrapilon is a two-arch stone bridge over the Ambrose River, clearly of Roman origin, which has been rebuilt and rebuilt several times over its long history.
