Biography

He was one of the leaders of the student movement of Dhaka University . He had a doctorate in historical sciences.

He was one of the student leaders of the popular uprising against the Ayyub Khan regime (1962), which led to the mitigation of repression against the opposition and the release of political leaders from prison. He was considered a Maoist politician, was the secretary general of the Students Union of East Pakistan (1962-1963). He later became one of the leaders of the labor movement, mainly in the industrial zone of Tonga. He was also the leader of the pro-Chinese faction, which broke away from the Communist Party in 1966 and was one of the first to demand the independence of East Pakistan at a nationwide rally on February 22, 1970.

From 1967 to 1985 was president of the Bengal Workers Federation.

After independence, Bangladesh joined the National Avamist Party Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani and became its Secretary General (1972-1974). He later created the United People's Party (1974) and served as its secretary general until 1986. As a party leader, he entered the coalition government formed by President Ziaur Rahman and took the post of Minister of Education (1978). However, he soon left this post due to political disagreements with coalition leaders.

Subsequently, he played a significant role in the fight against the military regime of Mohammad Ershad , but then changed his political views by joining the pro-government party of Jatya and holding the posts of Minister of Commerce, Minister of Shipping and Ports, Minister of Information and Minister of Education, Deputy Prime Minister (1986-1990 )

In 1986-1996 He was elected deputy of the parliament and deputy head of the parliamentary faction of the party Jatya.

After the fall of the Ershad administration in 1999, he went to Australia for treatment, where he becomes a visiting professor in South Asian global politics at the University of Western Sydney (1999-2000). His public lectures were on the independence movement, geopolitical developments in the subcontinent, and the development of education in Bangladesh.

After returning to his homeland in August 2001 he was arrested, but in October released. Then he again lived in Australia as a refugee, receiving a disability pension.

In February 2004, he returned to Bangladesh and to the country's socio-political life. In 2013, he was expelled from the Jatya party and joined the ranks of the Nationalist Party .
