Duke of Palmer

Duke de Palmela ( port. Duque de Palmela ) - Portuguese aristocratic title. It was created on October 18, 1850 by a decree of Queen Mary II for a major Portuguese politician and diplomat, Pedro de Souz Holstein (1781-1850). He served as chairman of the Council of Ministers of Portugal three times (1834-1835, 1842, 1846). On April 11, 1812, he received the title of Count de Palmel from Queen Mary I. He was the plenipotentiary of Portugal at the Vienna Congress of 1814 and the Paris Congress of 1815 . On July 3, 1823, the title of Marquis de Palmelet was created for him by King Juan VI. On April 4, 1836, Pedro de Souza Holstein received the title of Duke de Fayal from Queen Mary II.

Initially, the Dukes of Palmel bore the name "Souza Holstein." Recently, they also use the surname “Souza Holstein-Beck”.

Pedro de Souza Holstein was the son of Alexander de Souza Holstein (1751-1803) and Isabelle Giuliana de Souza Coutinho Monteiro Pine (1753-1793). On the male line, the dukes of Palmela come from the Portuguese family of Souza, and on the female line - from the Dukes of Holstein. The grandmother of Pedu de Souza Holstein was Maria Anna Leopoldina, Princess Schleswig-Holstein-Sönnerborg-Beck (1717-1789), the wife of Manuel de Souza (1703-1759).

  • 1941-1969: Domingos Maria do Espirito Santo José Francisco de Paula de Souza Holstein-Beck (June 6, 1897 - November 16, 1969), the second son of the previous
  • 1969-1997: Luis Maria da Asuncan de Souza Holstein-Beck (August 13, 1919-1997), the eldest son of the previous
  • 1997 - present: Pedro Domingos de Souza IE Holstein-Beck (born January 27, 1951), son of the previous one.
