History
Construction began in 1987 . In 1995 it was suspended due to financial difficulties. In December 2002, construction was resumed with international assistance. The launch of the treatment facilities took place on September 22, 2005 . The total cost of construction was approximately 128 million euros, half of which was allocated by Europe (before, about 1 million 220 thousand cubic meters of untreated wastewater were directly dumped into the sea per day).
Wastewater treatment technology
Wastewater treatment processes at HUZOS are based on the technology of deep biological removal of biogenic substances. And sludge treatment consists in its compaction, dewatering the mixed sludge and subsequent incineration. Incineration of sediments is to be carried out at a special plant located on the territory of south-west sewage treatment plants. Purified wastewater is disinfected with ultraviolet before discharge. The South-Western treatment facilities of St. Petersburg per day purify about 330 thousand m³ of city sewage [2] .
