Biography

Gita was born on December 15, 1988 in the village of Balali, Bhiwani District, Haryana State. Her parents are a former member of the Indian national wrestling team, and his wife, Daya. Gita has a younger brother and three sisters: Babita , , and Sangita. Her father also took custody of two daughters of his dead brother: Vinesh and [1] . Gita and her sister Babita received a bachelor's degree from Bhiwani State College for Girls. Mahavir began to train his daughter from the age of 12 [2] , over time, all the other children were connected to the training. This initiative was condemned by local residents who believed that the struggle is not a female affair, and the Phogat sisters will not be able to get married because of this. Since there were no more female fighters in the district, the sisters had to fight with the boys to train [3] [4] .

Criticism of fellow villagers stopped only after the first serious victories. Gita won three Asian cadet championships in a row in 2003-2005 and the Asian Junior Championship in 2007 [5] . In 2009, she earned gold at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championships in Jalandhar , and the next at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi [6] . In the same year, she took part in the Asian Championship in Delhi , where she took 9th place, and the Asian Games , where she lost in the quarterfinal to an athlete from the DPRK [7] .

In 2011, Gita performed at the Asian and World Championships, taking eighth place in both. In 2012, she won bronze at the Asian Championships in Kumi [8] . In the same year, she qualified for the London Olympics , winning the Asian Qualifying Tournament in Alma-Ata and thus becoming the first Indian female wrestler at the Olympic Games [9] . However, in competitions, she lost the Canadian Tone Verbik [10] in her first battle, taking 13th place in the standings. Gita earned another bronze medal at the World Championship , having won in a duel for third place against Ukrainian Natalya Sinishin [11] .

The following year, the Gita moved from the “up to 55 kg” category to “up to 59 kg”. In this weight, she took second place in the annual tournament in memory of Dave Schultz [12] and fifth in the World Cup competitions in Ulaanbaatar [13] . At the 2015 Asian Championships, she won bronze [14] . In 2016, she lost to the novice athlete Sakshi Malik in the Pro Wrestling League. Later, Malik took the place of Gita in the Indian team at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro [15] .

In November 2016, Gita married Indian wrestler [16] [17] .
