Biography

He graduated from the Mining Institute in 1875. He taught mathematics at the Orenburg Military Gymnasium, then in the Nizhny Novgorod Cadet Corps (where he played an important role in the formation of A. A. Ukhtomsky ).

He defended his thesis "Study on the theory of Abelian integrals ." He investigated the problem of reducing abelian integrals to elementary functions [3] . Dolby's 1890 paper, On Abel's Pseudo-Elliptic Integrals, is devoted to establishing sufficient conditions for certain elliptic integrals to be expressed in logarithms ; Applying the Weierstrass function , Dolbnya achieved more accurate results than those obtained by E. I. Zolotaryov and I. I. Somov , who worked on the same problem [3] .

Since 1896 - professor of higher mathematics at the Mining Institute (with a break in 1904-1906, when, together with V.I. Bauman , K.I. Bogdanovich , L.I. Lutugin , V.V. Nikitin and N.N. Yakovlev resigned in protest against the expulsion of revolutionary-minded students and returned only after students were again admitted to classes). In 1910-1912 - Director of the Mining Institute.

Beginning in 1890, he published articles in French scientific periodicals that compiled the posthumous volume of selected works ( Fr. Oeuvres mathématiques de Jean Dolbnia ), published in 1913 with a preface by G. Darboux .

Ivan Petrovich is an outstanding teacher, his most prominent student was N. M. Krylov [3] .

According to the Mathematics Genealogy Project, Dolbnya was the founder of the second largest of the 24 families of mathematicians in the world (the first in size goes to Polcastro, the third and fourth to D'Alembert and Leibniz [4] .

Buried in the Smolensk Orthodox cemetery near the Moscow path [5] .
