Biography

In 1985 he entered the history department of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov . In 1986 he was called up for military service , after which in 1988 he continued his studies at the university. He specialized in the Department of Modern and Contemporary History , in 1989 he began studying the French Revolution in a special seminar by Professor A.V. Ado . Under his leadership, in 1992 he defended his thesis on "How to End the Revolution?" The debate in the Convention around the Constitution of III year and the political consciousness of the Thermidorians . ” At the end of the university course, he entered the graduate school of the History Department of Moscow State University. Under the leadership of A. V. Ado, being his last student, he prepared and in 1996 defended his dissertation for the degree of candidate of historical sciences, “From Thermidor to the Directory: The Political Struggle around the Adoption of the Constitution of the Third Year of the Republic”. Since 1996, he has been working at the Department of New and Contemporary History of the History Department of Moscow State University.

In the second half of the 1990s and the beginning of the 2000s, D. Yu. Bovykin, together with A. V. Chudinov and other historians of the “new Russian school,” carried out a conceptual historiographical turn associated with the rejection of the predominantly Marxist perception of the French Revolution as a transition from feudalism to capitalism and clearly manifested at the round table "The French Revolution of the XVIII century and the bourgeoisie" (2001). Specializing in the study of the political life of post-Thermidorian France, D. Yu. Bovykin criticized the notion common in Marxist historical literature about this period as a “descending line of revolution” [1] . Since 2000, he has been a member of the editorial board, and since 2004, deputy editor-in-chief of the international publication French Yearbook .

Since the 2000s, it has also been actively developing the history of the royalist movement of the period of the French Revolution [2] and, in particular, the activities of its leader Louis XVIII [3] . The result of these studies was a dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Historical Sciences “Louis XVIII and the French Royalists under Thermidor and the Directory (1794-1799),” defended in 2017.
