Ventslabada [1] ( Latvian. Vecslabada , Lat. Vacsloboda , formerly also Vetssloboda [2] , in translation Old Sloboda ) is a large village in the Ludza region of Latvia , the administrative center of the Istra volost . Located about 320 kilometers from Riga , 57 km from Ludza [1] , 20 kilometers from the junction of the borders of Latvia , Russia and Belarus . Vezsloboda is located between three lakes - Istras, Dzilyays and Audzel, connected by small rivers.

The arrival of Vecsloboda at the beginning of the 20th century united about 5,000 people with two active temples [3] . In Soviet times, the town was the center of the Istrensky village council of the Ludza district . The central estate of the Istra state farm was located in the village [1] . In 1935, 266 people lived in the village, in 1989 - 495 people, and in 2017 - 301 inhabitants [4] .
In the village there are: Istrenskaya secondary school [5] (the smallest secondary school in Latvia [6] ), a kindergarten, a cultural center, a post office, a Catholic and Orthodox church. The Orthodox Church of the Resurrection of Christ is one of the largest rural churches in Latvia.
