General Information
Defenders of Wildlife was founded in 1947 and has now become one of the largest conservation organizations in the United States, seeking to conserve wild species of animals and plants, protect their natural habitats, and maintain biodiversity. The approach of Defenders of Wildlife to their work comes down to three basic principles:
- Acting at the state and local community level, the organization initiates, supports and develops specific conservation projects designed to protect key species of animals and plants directly in their habitats.
- Defenders of Wildlife also interacts with individual state and US federal and international policymakers, seeking to influence these policies and local and federal laws to protect wild animals and their habitats.
- Defenders of Wildlife also influence state and state policies through courts, initiating and leading litigation to protect wild animals and plants and their environment from environmentally illiterate state and / or private companies.
Organizational objectives
The main goal of Defenders of Wildlife is to protect the biodiversity of North America, that is, to protect all habitats and endangered species of this continent, from plants and pollinators to the highest predators . In its work, the organization proceeds from the premise that it is impossible to protect and preserve any particular species without protecting and conserving all biodiversity in its habitat. The organization also believes that transnational systems of public and private protected lands, including protected rivers and coastal waters, covering key habitats of endangered animals and plants, are necessary for the best conservation of wildlife.
Subsidiaries
Defenders of Wildlife also has a subsidiary (or, as stated in the English Wikipedia, sisterly) organization called the Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund, which specializes in lobbying environmental legislation and directly influencing state and state laws. [2]
Confrontations with famous personalities
In 2009, Defenders of Wildlife announced the launch of its new media campaign, called “Eye on Palin” (“Watch Sarah Palin”). This campaign was dedicated to the defenders of Wildlife’s “terribly non-ecological” policy of Sarah Palin , the then governor of Alaska , and, in particular, her “helicopter hunts” of Alaskan wolves. In response, Sarah Palin called Defenders of Wildlife "environmental extremists," and her activity "control the number of predators." She accused this non-profit organization of "distorting the truth for the sake of earning money from innocent Americans."
This organization also initiated a lawsuit about the fact that the international policy of the federal government did not comply with the current at the time the law "On endangered species" (eng. Endangered Species Act). This lawsuit is now known as “Luhan v. Defenders of Wildlife” (Eng. Lujan v. Defenders of Wildlife), the US Supreme Court then decided in favor of the government, deciding that the grounds for the claim filed by Defenders of Wildlife were insufficient.
Awards
Defenders of Wildlife are recognized as one of the best environmental non-profit organizations from the point of view of Reader's Digest magazine (2006).
