The length of the railways of Kyrgyzstan in 2006 was 470 km, in 2012 only 424 km remained [1] . Rail transport accounts for about 3% of cargo turnover. The degree of deterioration of rolling stock at the beginning of the 2000s is high, there are 2500 freight cars, 450 passenger and 50 locomotives. Transportation is carried out by the state company Kyrgyz Temir Zholu .
The country's railway network consists of scattered dead ends. Separate lines connect the north of the country with the railways of Kazakhstan and the southern regions of the country with the railway network of Uzbekistan . Other railway lines run through the southwestern regions of Kyrgyzstan, connecting the country's large industrial and human settlements with the Ferghana region [1] .
Since 1996, a plan has been discussed for the possible construction of the China – Kyrgyzstan – Uzbekistan railway (“CKU”) [2] .
