From the history of karate in Azerbaijan
USSR Period
The emergence and first stage of development of eastern martial arts in Azerbaijan falls into the period of the USSR . For the first time the word karate and oriental types appeared simultaneously with the official recognition of judo in the USSR as a sport . In 1972, a judo school was officially opened. In 1978, an order was issued (the USSR State Committee on Sports) to open a karate school.
The central karate school in Moscow was headed by Aleksey Shturmin , who admittedly became the first karate teacher in the USSR . Taking responsibility for the development of karate, the Central School conducted several All-Union certification and coaching seminars. It should be noted that the requirements for future coaches were very strict. They should already have a sports category in a sport and higher physical education education, as well as possess the first skills of a chosen sport.
Azerbaijani karate masters - Mir-Ali Seyidov, Vladimir Kharitonov, Suleiman Mamedov and Azad Kazimov took part in the first certification and coaching seminar. At that time, official karate schools in Azerbaijan were at Dynamo - Mir-Ali Seyidov; The Petrel - Azad Kazimov; “ Spartak ” - Khagani Agayev; "Vodnik" - Vladimir Kharitonov . Chairman and state. coach - Julius Gusman .
Banning and Reviving Karate
- The performance of Azerbaijani karatekas at all-union competitions has always been held in a difficult and tough struggle. Due to the lack of equipment and safe equipment at the time, sporting events were distinguished by severe injuries.
- Against the background of teams from the RSFSR , Moscow , the Baltic States , Belarus , where certain traditions have already been established, the athletes of these republics quite often, because of their geographical location, took part in various seminars and joint gatherings with representatives of teams from several European countries, as well as the teams of Uzbekistan , which were played by the Koreans, - Azerbaijani karate players have always been distinguished by high technical training, the use of complex combinations of hand and foot techniques.
- Suffice it to recall Aziz Isakhanov, who spoke brilliantly at the third USSR Championship ( Volgograd , 1983 ), losing only in the final to V. Pak ( RSFSR ) and who finished second. He was awarded a prize for “the best technique” for the use of a circular kick of a usiro-mawashi foot (a difficult technical operation with a leg, which is highly appreciated) and a clear victory over his rivals.
- Oktay Mammadov, Aziz Isakhanov, Mekhti Hasanov, Ulvi Kuliev, Yashar Bashirov, Fizuli Musayev, Mir-Jabbar Seyidov, Idayat Shabanov, Ahmed Gatamov, Yagub Allahverdiyev, Elchin Ibrahimov - all of the athletes will remain in the history of Azerbaijani karate, in the history of Azerbaijani karate, they will be used in the history of Azerbaijani karate, and they will be used in the history of Azerbaijani karate, and they will be used in the history of Azerbaijani karate, and they will be used in the history of Azerbaijani karate, and they will be in the history of Azerbaijani karate, and they will be in the history of Azerbaijani karate, and they will be used in the history of Azerbaijani karate, and they will be used in the history of Azerbaijani karate, and they will be used in the history of Azerbaijani karate after the day, in the history of the Azerbaijani karate, in the history of Azerbaijani karate Foundation for the development of sports karate in the republic.
- In 1984, the USSR Sports Committee issued the famous Decree No. 404 “On the Prohibition of Karate Education in Sports Societies”. The reason is the discrepancy between the moral principles and the harmonious development of the personality of the Soviet person.
- By the end of the 80s, the popularity of karate in the world was so great that the leaders of sports were forced to give permission again to hold championships and USSR Cups . The question of the prohibition of karate was decided not at the State Sports Committee , but at a higher level. But, in the end, thanks to the support of the leadership of the State Sports Committee, the efforts were still crowned with success.
- The ban never gives positive results. And the case in karate is no exception. Driven into the deep underground, it took bizarre, sometimes ugly forms and therefore had a lot of work to do.
- Despite the long period of the ban, for almost 7 years, true karate lovers did not stop training. The Union of Karate Organizations of the USSR (SOK) of the USSR was created , for the first time Soviet karate players performed in all competitions held by the All - Ukrainian Higher Educational Institution and the EKU . Also, a great impetus to the development was created by public organizations, such as the FBI , SOVE , Shotokan Federation, Keokushinkai , Sheringi-Ryu .
- Before the ban of karate, three championships were held. The fourth championship of the USSR, held in Rostov-on-Don ( 1991 ), was conceived as a celebration of the rebirth of karate, as a launching pad from which a new stage in the development of Soviet karate will begin counting the time.
- The national team of Azerbaijan in the fourth USSR championship was represented by a team from among the winners of the republic championship. As part of her were: Mehdi Hasanov (60 kg), Rovshan Javadov (65 kg.), Mir-Jabbar Seyidov (70 kg.), Ahmed Gatamov (75 kg.), Ulvi Kuliyev (80 kg.).
- Significant date for Azerbaijani karate and the starting point of all future victories. The first and only USSR champion from Azerbaijan, Mehdi Hasanov, in the weight category of 60 kg.
- Back in the so-called "forbidden" times, when Azerbaijani athletes could compete only through the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Dynamo CS in Azerbaijan, there were: the first master of sports Aziz Isakhanov, the master of sports Idayat Shabanov, the champion of the CS Dinamo Fizuli Musayev and many others athletes.
- A separate page for the development of karate in the republic belongs to the “Hand-to-Hand Combat Center and Self-Defense Without Weapons” at the Dynamo Sports Society and its creators - Alekber Askerov and Mir-Ali Seyidov. The center was established in 1984. Its main purpose was to train officers of internal affairs bodies for service and law enforcement. The gym was located in the central building of the FSO " Dynamo " and was equipped with everything necessary for practicing hand-to-hand combat (karate) and a sambo combat section.
- In view of the introduction of a ban on the practice of karate in the sports sections and for the effective work of the training center, all the best karate artists of the republic were invited to this center. Thus, it was possible to preserve the experience gained over the years and to carry out further work with the younger generation.

After losing a Turk to the second meeting in a consolation fight, Rashad Huseynov then scored 3 victories and won a bronze medal. These awards led the Azerbaijani national team for the second year in a row to the 4th place in the team event. If the results of the European Championship were counted only in kumite, then Azerbaijan would occupy the 1st place. Best of all in the German tatami were Vugar Mejidov, Taleh Babayev and Seymour Huseynov, who passed the first two rounds. The intensity of the struggle could be judged by the fact that from the former Soviet republics, even Russia, could not win a single medal. France took the first place in the unofficial competition, which surpassed Japan by two gold medals (6 and 4, respectively).
2002
On November 21-24, the 16th WKF World Championship ended in Madrid, the capital of Spain, where six of them defended the honor of the Azerbaijani school of karate - Yusif Jafarov, Gurban Tagiyev , Seymur Huseynov, Seyran Bagirov, Taleh Babayev, Vugar Medzhidov and Bashirov Said on kata. Considering the fact that it was the second World Championship for Azerbaijani karate players, and the fact that this year the Azerbaijani team missed the European Championship, the seventh place in the team competition is very high for the aforementioned athletes.

For Azerbaijani karate, this was a debut. For the first time in such competitions, the only woman made her debut - a karate woman of the Azerbaijani national team - Elmira Alekperova.
But not only the Frenchman and the representatives of his team, who are the leaders of European karate, but also many other foreign specialists, at these moments, tried to recall another athlete at such a young age who so rapidly entered the world elite of this kind of martial arts. Among the stars of the world karate, perhaps, only the now twice world champion Khaldun Alagash from Turkey can boast of such a triumphant start of an adult career. He won his first champion title at 18 (!) Years, becoming World Champion in 1990 in Mexico. Happily smiling after the victory over Byamonti Rafael Agayev was 19 years old. For some time he spent four fights with Karate from Estonia (8: 0), Turkey (3: 1). In the final, Byamonti lost - 0: 3. The only athlete in the national team of Azerbaijan was Said Bashirova, who participated in the kata championship.
2005
Azerbaijani karatekas showed a super result at the next 40th European Championship, which ended in the Spanish city of Tenerife. European specialists were stunned by young Azerbaijani guys who won two gold and two bronze medals. Nobody predicted such a result. Before the trip to Tenerife, President of the National Federation of the WKF Yashar Bashirov spoke about the chances of the guys for three medals. Considering that last year only Rafael Agayev won the gold award at similar competitions, the chances of realizing this prediction were 50 to 50. But when Jeyhun Agasiyev won the gold medal in the weight of 70 kg on the very first day, it became clear that great success was coming . Jeyhun's success was not accidental: a month ago he won a gold medal (the only one among Azerbaijani karate players) in the Islamiad. And in the Spanish tatami one of the best young fighters of Azerbaijan was not equal. In the final, the Frenchman RuBel Lashen tried very hard, but still admitted his defeat. Following this, the bronze medal in weight 60 kg won Yusif Jafarov. Over the past 6-7 years, he won many awards of various denominations in stylistic directions, but Jafarov was not lucky in WKF competitions. It is gratifying that the Spanish tatami was happy for him. The result of his teammate, but already in the weight of 65 kg, was repeated by Rashad Huseynov. Rafael Agayev, as always, was not left without a reward. To the general surprise of specialists, the 20-year-old Azerbaijani fighter said his word in the open weight category. In the category where karate players weighing 80 kg and above played, Rafael Agayev showed an exceptional will to win and won a gold medal. In the decisive battle, he defeated local athlete I. Leal Reglero. As a result, at the expense of four awards, the Azerbaijani team, for the first time in history, rose to fourth place in the team event among 40 countries. The teams of Spain (4 gold, 2 silver and 5 bronze medals), Holland (3-1-0) and Italy (2-2-4) are located ahead. Fifth place went to the recognized favorites of the championship - the French (1-3-6). Result: In personal kumite 2 gold, 2 bronze.
2007
At the 42nd European Championship, which was held in the Slovak capital Bratislava , the Azerbaijani team won 2 gold medals, taking the 4th team place among 42 countries of the world. Both medals were on the account of Rafael Agayev , who won the competition in weight up to 70 kg and the absolute category [9] .
2009
In May 2009, the next European WKF karate championship was held in Zagreb ( Croatia ). Azerbaijan won the bronze in team kumite, defeating the Spaniards with the score 3: 1 [10] .
2010
The Azerbaijani national team ranked third in the team kumite of the European Championship in the style of WKF, held from May 7 to 10, 2010 in Greece. In the semifinals, the Azerbaijani karatekas lost to the Spaniards, who in turn lost to Turkey’s decisive meeting [11] . At the continental championship, the Azerbaijani karate rifle Rafael Agayev (75 kg) became the seven-time winner of the European Championship [12] .

He is a 3-time European Champion and 2-time bronze medalist at the World Championships. And so Jeyhun managed to show himself on the Arabian carpet, where, having beaten Iranian karate, in the final, he won first place. Silver medals in weight of 70 kg were won by Rashad Huseynov, who lost in the decisive battle to Egyptian Mohammed Ibrahim Salem Osman Alshibmi, and up to 60 kg in weight to Yusif Jafarov.
