Biography
Being the son of Arsham , Gistasp was a member of the royal family of the Achaemenids. He was a satrap of Persia under Cambyses II , and probably also under Cyrus II the Great . Gistaspus initially accompanied Cyrus on his campaign against the Massagets , but was sent to Persia to monitor his eldest son, Darius, whom the king suspected of treason due to a dream.
In addition to Darius, Gistasp had two sons - Artaban and Artan [1] . Ammianus Marcellinus considered him to be the head of magicians , and told about his studies in India with the Brahmins [2] . The name of Gistasp is mentioned in the inscription in Persepolis [3] .
