Biography
Grew up in the suburb of Wroclaw , a small town Krzyzanowice. From childhood, he led an active lifestyle, participated in various sports events. I tried my hand at orienteering , cross-country skiing , mountain running . However, all this was for pleasure, Rafal did not regularly engage in any sport. The first coach and, accordingly, a systematic approach, he appeared only at the end of school.
Upon admission to the Academy of Physical Culture in Wroclaw, he was noticed by Marek Rogey, who became Rafal's new mentor. Omelko's first specialization was hurdling, where he was the winner of the Polish junior championship. He was even called a possible successor to Marek Plavgo (winner of the World Cup from Poland), but things did not go further than conversation [2] . After the fiasco at the 2010 European Championships (retired in preliminary races) and due to a series of injuries, Rafal focused on smooth 400 meters [3] .
As part of the Polish team, he participated in all major tournaments. In 2013, at the European Winter Championships for the first time he participated in the relay race at the adult level. The Poles finished third, but Omelko at his stage pushed Briton Richard Buck , because of which the judges disqualified the whole team [4] .
He was part of the four who won the silver of the European Championships 2014 and 2016 .
At the European Indoor Championships 2015, he won 2 medals. In personal form, he finished third with a personal record of 46.26, and in the relay race he won silver, becoming a co-author of the Polish record (3.02.97).
In person, he became the finalist of the European Championship 2016 and the semi-finalist of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . As part of the relay quartet, he took 7th place in Brazil.
He won two medals at the 2017 European Indoor Championships : in the 400m race he became second after Pavel Maslak (46.08, personal record), and in the relay race he became the champion of the continent (he ran at the final stage).
At the 2017 World Cup, he reached the semifinals in the individual run and took seventh place in the relay 4x400 meters in the national team of Poland. Won the Universiade bronze medal at a distance of 400 meters.
In March 2018, as part of the Polish national team, he set a new world record in the 4x400 meter relay. Together with Karol Zalevsky , Lukasz Kravchuk and Yakub Kshevina, they beat the US national team in the final of the indoor indoor championship , winning gold medals and improving their previous record by 0.36 seconds - 3.01.77 [5] . Achievement of the Polish quartet was beaten a week later at the US student championship by a team of the Texas A&M University , who covered a distance of 3.01.39 [6] .
