2019 World Basketball Championship

The application for the organization and holding of the 2019 World Cup began in April 2014. On March 15, 2015, the FIBA Executive Committee announced that the 2019 World Cup will be held in an Asian country. Competitors in the struggle for the right to host the World Cup were China and the Philippines ^[1] . Applications from Russia , France , Lithuania , Venezuela and Mexico were rejected, and applications from Germany , Turkey and Qatar were postponed to participate in the election of the host country of the 2023 World Cup .

Both countries participating in the final round had the experience of organizing major international basketball competitions. The Philippines hosted the 1978 World Cup and three Asian Championships ( 1960 , 1973, and 2013 ). On account of China were the upcoming Asian Championships and four already held ( 2001 , 2003 , 2009 , 2011 ).

The final presentation of applications took place on August 7, 2015 in Tokyo , Japan . The vote of the FIBA commission members determined that the world championship will be held in China ^[2] .

China automatically qualified for the championship as the host country. Starting from this World Cup, a new qualification system is applied. Now, tickets to the World Cup are not played out in continental championships. The Olympic champion and the world champion also do not receive the right to participate automatically. In addition, FIBA will no longer issue wildcards for the World Cup. 31 participants of the upcoming World Cup will be determined by the results of the qualification tournament, which will begin in the fall of 2017 and end in the winter of 2019 ^[3] .

The selection will be carried out in four zones: Africa (5 places), America (7 places), Asia / Oceania (7 places) and Europe (12 places). 32 top-rated teams will become participants in the selection in the European zone, and 16 best teams in the remaining zones. In the first round, the teams will be divided into groups of four teams, in which they will play the group tournament, playing with each of the teams in their group at home and away. The three best teams of each group go to the next round, where the groups merge in pairs. In this round, each team holds games at home and away against each team in its group, with the exception of those with which games have already been played during the first stage. Points scored in meetings with these teams during the first round are retained. The best teams from each group of the second round get the right to participate in the 2019 World Cup.

Teams that are not among the 16 best on their continent (32 for Europe) play in Division B. The best teams in this division get the right to play butt matches with teams taking fourth place in the first round of Division A for the right to participate in Division A in next qualifying round.

Qualified Teams

The championship will be held in three stages. At the preliminary stage, 32 teams will be divided into 8 groups, in which each team will play with each. The two best teams from each group go to the group stage of the tournament. In it, 16 teams are again divided into groups of 4, in which each team will play with each, except for the teams that played at the preliminary stage. The two best teams from each group go to the playoffs ^[4] . The two worst of each group go to the qualification stage for 17-32 places. At this stage, the teams are again divided into groups of 4, in which each team will play with each, except for the teams that played at the preliminary stage. According to its results, the places of teams in the overall standings will be determined.

Starting from this tournament draw, the preliminary stage, which was not held at the 2014 World Cup , returns.

In total, 92 games will be played over 16 days.

The draw of the tournament will be held March 16, 2019 in the Chinese city ​​of Shenzhen .

Before the draw, it was decided:

1st basket - was formed of 3 teams with the highest rating of FIBA ​​and the team of China, as the hosts of the tournament.

The remaining baskets were formed according to the FIBA ​​rating.

Canada was moved from the 5th basket to the 6th, (Iran - from the 6th to the 5th) to avoid the draw of two teams from America in the same group.

Teams from 1, 4, 5 and 8 baskets form groups A, C, E and G.

Teams from 2, 3, 6 and 7 baskets form groups B, D, F and H.

China will play in group A.
