Conspiracy Bajamonte Tiepolo
Biajamonto Tiepolo, like many other representatives of the aristocratic families of Venice, was unhappy with the policy pursued by the ruling Doge, Pietro Gradenigo . He led a conspiracy, the purpose of which was to overthrow the Doge. However, owing to betrayal, mistakes in planning, insufficient support from the population and the storm that broke out on the day of the speech ( June 15, 1310 ), the conspiracy failed. Doge managed to call to the city the troops loyal to him, who repulsed a detachment of conspirators near St. Mark's Square . Tiepolo himself fled when he saw his standard-bearer smashing his head with a large stone, which was thrown from an old woman’s window. After the defeat of Bajamonte, Tiepolo surrendered to the authorities, and two days later the Grand Council sentenced him to exile in Istria for a term of four years. His house in Venice was destroyed, some elements of the building were transferred to the church of San Vio . While in exile, Tiepolo continued to maintain ties with the enemies of the Republic of Venice. Despite the fact that Biajamonte Tiepolo survived not only his immediate enemy, Doge Pietro Gradenigo (who died four months after the attempted conspiracy of Tiepolo), but also the next two Doge, he was never allowed to return to his native city. The exact date of death of Bajamonte Tiepolo is unknown, but after 1329 his name is no longer mentioned in the annals.
One result of the failed coup was the creation in Venice of the Council of Ten , a special tribunal to investigate crimes against the state system.
