Sports Biography

Pupil of the Tashkent school of taekwondo. At adult international competitions, Baykuziev made his debut at the 2009 Universiade in Belgrade in the category of up to 78 kg, where he lost in the second round to future bronze medalist South Song Hong [1] , representing the Uzbek State Institute of Physical Culture . Also in 2009, Jasur took part in the first world championship for himself, but was stopped in the 1/8 finals by Azerbaijani Rashad Akhmadov [2] .

Since 2012, he moved into the weight category up to 87 kg, and on March 12 of the same year he won the German Open Championship in Hamburg [3] . At the Asian Championships in Ho Chi Minh City, he stopped a step away from the gold award, losing in the final to the host of the competition Nguyen Trong Kyong [4] .

At the 2013 World Championships in Puebla, Jasur could not defeat the representative of China Ma Zhaoyong in the 1/8 finals. A year later, at the Asian home championship in Tashkent, Baykuziev won the strongest title on the continent, defeating the Iranian Yousef Kerami in the final [5] , and became the winner of the Asian Games held in Incheon [6] .

By the 2015 World Championships in Chelyabinsk, Baykuziev was considered among the main favorites of the tournament [7] , and Jasur, having justified forecasts, won a silver medal, losing only to Radik Isaev in the final fight [8] .

Due to the limited weight categories in taekwondo presented in the Olympic program , the weight at which Baikuziev performs was combined with heavyweights. Thus, the two first lines of the combined world ranking of the highest weight category were lead by two Uzbek athletes — Jasur himself and Dmitry Shokin , which gave both the right to speak at the Olympics , but due to national quotas, Uzbekistan was granted only one Olympic license [9] .. The coaching staff of the national team made a choice in favor of Shokin [10] . Baykuziev later admitted that he agreed with such a coaching decision [11] .
