History

The first football match according to the rules of rugby in Brisbane was held on August 19, 1878, then the city team played with Ipswich [4] . Three weeks later, the teams played again, this time according to the early rules of Australian football [5] . Later, other Queensland teams such as Toowoomba, Rockhampton and Charters Towers became rivals of the Brisbane team [3] .

City Team

Over the next hundred years, the city team was recruited from the best players in local clubs and played both against rivals from Australia and against foreigners: with the British Isles team in 1904, All Blacks in 1951 and Fiji in 1954 [3] .

The first match of the Brisbane team against the Queensland team, to which players from all over the state except Brisbane were called, took place on June 30, 1902 as part of the tournament at the local carnival; the capital won the state with a score of 16:15 [6] . After the appearance of rugby league in 1909, such carnivals became rare, and after World War I, rugby began to decline in the state [6] .

Matches between the national and capital teams resumed in 1965 and were held as part of the same carnival until 1983, when the State Championship was created. The teams of North, South and Central Queensland and Brisbane competed in the tournament, while the national team from the capital won the tournament for four consecutive seasons, which prompted the organizers to change the format of the competition [6] .

Ballymore Tornadoes

In 2006, after a series of consultations with state rugby unions, the Australian Rugby Union decided to hold a national rugby tournament starting in 2007 [7] . The club representing Brisbane was Ballymore Tornadoes, and the state represented East Coast Aces . [8] One season later, the tournament was abolished for financial reasons [9] . According to the results of the only Australian Rugby Championship draw, “Bellimore Tornadoes” took the seventh place out of eight and was disbanded.

National Rugby Championship

In 2013, the Australian Rugby Union announced the creation of a new national rugby tournament - the National Rugby Championship [10] . In March 2014, the Brisbane City was announced, which became one of the nine founding clubs of the tournament [11] .

According to the results of the regular part of the first season, Brisbane City took third place, which allowed the club to get into the semifinals of the tournament, where they beat Country Eagles with a score of 32:26, losing after the first half with a score of 16:26 [12] . In the final, the Perth Spirit club was defeated with a score of 37:26 [13] .

In the season of 2015, the club dominated its rivals, taking first place in the regular season, while not having suffered a single defeat. In addition, in the match against Melbourne Rising , the challenge cup was won - Horan-Little Trophy . In the semifinals, “Brisbane City” beat the “ Sydney Stars ” with a score of 47:32 [14] . On October 31, 2015, the club won the second title in a row, winning the Canberra Vikings in the final with a score of 21:10 [15] .

The 2016 season turned out to be a failure for Brisbane. The first game of the season against Country Eagles ended in a 22:12 defeat, despite the fact that the opponent received three yellow cards in the second half [16] . In the third match of the season, Brisbane met at the “Bellimore” with the “ Canberra Wikings ” and suffered a crushing defeat with a score of 20:52. This meant that the club interrupted its home series of five victories and was forced to hand over the Horan-Little Trophy to the “Vikings” [17] . In seven meetings, “City” won only twice - with “Western Sydney Rams” and “Queensland Country” and did not get into the playoffs. According to the results of the season, two players were included in the team of the season according to the version of the Australian Rugby Union - Lokan Tui and the eighth Isi Naisarami [18] .

Stadium

Brisbane City hosts home games at Bellimore Stadium, which seats 18,000 spectators. It was built in 1966 and is considered the "home" of rugby in Queensland [2] . Before moving to the Suncorp Stadium in 2006, Queensland Reds played at the stadium. In addition, the stadium hosted international matches of the national teams within the framework of the Bledislow Cup [19] [20] and the semifinal of the 1987 World Cup [21] .
