The poodle takes second place in the ranking of the smartest breeds , compiled by Dr. Stanley Coren , after the Border Collie [2] . They can adapt to almost any climate .

It is believed that poodles were bred in France , but some call them the birthplace of Germany , since the word "poodle" is of German origin [3] . It should be noted, however, that in France this breed of dog is called caniche from cane - duck [4] [5] , which indicates the origin of the poodle from hunting, French water dogs . Poods have a life expectancy of 10 to 18 years.

In Europe, the poodle is known from the 15th to 16th centuries; for a long time it remained a dog that could belong only to persons of royal blood. For this, the large (royal) poodle got its name, and not at all for the size, as some believe. [6]

In the XVIII century, large poodles were actively used in military operations, mainly to search for the wounded and to provide field communications. In Russia, poodles were also used as a working breed, mainly hunting with a poodle went for ducks. A poodle can also be used as a shepherd dog. [7]

The breed has a variety of colors, but the classic colors are recognized as the standard of the breed - black, white and brown, as well as newer ones, the so-called "modern", silver and red (from fawn to bright orange). Some cynological organizations recognize the phantom (black and tan) and harlequin (white and black) varieties [8] , as well as other modified colors, including tiger. In exhibitions, dogs of these colors come out in separate rings, in fact, in many federations these colors are allocated to separate breeds.

Head

White poodle with a “winter” nose (weakened pigmentation of the urine)

Elongated. The skull is slightly convex, with a pronounced occipital protuberance. The transition from the forehead to the muzzle is not sharp. The back of the nose is straight. The eyes are amygdala, dark brown, in brown and brown-pigmented apricot and red dogs - brown to amber. Lips are dry, tight fitting. The color of the nose is depending on the color: black is black, white is black (for example, brown is undesirable), brown is brown, silver is black, and apricot and red are black or brown. The color of the nose of the harlequin is determined by the color of the painted areas of the hair, the color of the nose of the tan poodles depends on the base color (black or brown). A clarified nose (“winter nose”) is highly undesirable.

Character

The poodle gives the impression of a smart, constantly attentive and active dog, full of self-esteem. Due to its observantness and high interest in interacting with a person, a poodle learns easily and with interest, and with a competent approach, he stably demonstrates mastered skills, which earned him the fame of an ideal circus dog.

Due to its origin, poodles have a pronounced tendency to hunt and can be successfully used for hunting water and pine forests, mainly birds. Currently, the practice of hunting with poodles is prevalent mainly in the United States and Canada, where large (standard, royal) poodles work as dog dogs when hunting pheasants , ducks , less often other birds, as well as hares . In Russia, there is also the experience of hunting with poodles [9] . As dogs, they use mostly large poodles, very rarely - small ones.

Thanks to their excellent instinct, poodles can be successfully used in search and rescue and customs services. In the USSR, in the DOSAAF system, large poodles were included in the list of service breeds.

Whatever activity the poodle is engaged in, he works willingly and recklessly.

Poodle Grooming

Toy poodle after haircut

To participate in exhibitions held in accordance with FCI rules ( RKF in Russia, regional organizations in other countries), the following haircut options are currently allowed:

Haircut “LION” : Regardless of the type of hair, curly or cordless, a poodle is cut on its hind limbs to the ribs. Also sheared: muzzle above and below to the lower eyelids; cheeks; fore and hind limbs other than cuffs or bracelets, which on the hind limbs are optional; tail with the exception of a round or oval pompom, which must be maintained. Mustache is a must for everyone. It is allowed to leave the hair on the forelimbs, which is called "pants".

MODERN haircut : On the hind and forelimbs, the hair is left subject to the following rules:

1. Haircut:

a) The lower part of the forelimbs from the claws to the claw on the wrist; lower part of the hind limbs to a height corresponding to the forelimbs.

The haircut is limited to the paws.

b) Head and tail in accordance with the rules described above.

As an exception, this haircut allows:

• Short beard on the lower jaw, which should not be longer than 1 cm; its bottom line is trimmed parallel to the jaw. A beard shape called "de bove" - a goat beard, is not allowed.

• Lack of pompom on the tail

2. Shortened wool: On the body forms a top line, cuts more or less long to create a moire effect, but not less than 1 cm. The length of the hair gradually increases on the sides to the upper part of the limbs.

3. Lined wool:

a) A hat of a reasonable height is left on the head, just as wool is left on the neck from the back to the withers, and in front the wool forms a continuous line to the shaved part of the paws, while the line becomes slightly inclined at the height of the sternum. The hair on the upper part of the ears, as much as possible on the upper third of their length, can be shortened with scissors or shaved off in the direction of hair growth. The lower part of the ears remains with hair, the length of which increases downwards and ends with a lined fringe.

b) On the limbs, a clear transition is formed from the pants to the shaved part of the paws. The length of the drawn hair gradually increases to the shoulders and hips and ranges from 4 to 7 cm, depending on the growth of the poodle, but excessive fluffiness should be avoided. Pants on the hind legs should emphasize the angles of articulation typical of a poodle. Any fantasies leading to deviation from these standards are excluded. Regardless of which haircut is used, it should in no way affect the assessment at the exhibition. All submitted poodles that start in the same class should be described and evaluated together.

"ENGLISH HAIRCUT":

In this haircut, to develop the motifs of the “lion” haircut, bracelets or cuffs on the hind legs are modeled. Top notes on the head. Mustache is optional for this haircut. Permissible lack of a clear delineation of wool on the hind limbs. Top notes are also optional (it is strictly forbidden to use varnishes or any other means to create a top note).

Poodles that are not trimmed in accordance with the requirements of the standard, while they look like this, cannot be evaluated at official shows, but because of this they cannot be disqualified for breeding.

PAPI Haircut

A “papi” haircut is allowed at exhibitions as a preparatory stage for the exhibition haircuts given in the appendix to the standard. Papy haircuts at exhibitions can be awarded in this way, provided that they otherwise comply with the criteria contained in the standard.

Making haircuts ( grooming ) is a rather time-consuming process that requires special skills . For dogs that do not participate in exhibitions, use other, more practical, haircuts.
