Biography

Born into a mason's family.

In 1867, after graduating from the University of Copenhagen, he received a bachelor 's degree in law. In 1869 he was awarded the gold medal of the university. From 1872 to 1901 he was a professor of civil procedure law at the same university. At the same time he worked as a legal consultant to the government. For this activity in 1894 he received an honorary doctorate.

In the years 1880-1883. He was deputy chairman and chairman of the Maritime and Commercial Court, in 1882-1884. - founder and appraiser of the Copenhagen Exchange Commission.

In 1882, he became a member of the board, and in 1896, the director of the Nyt dansk brandforsikringselskab fire insurance company. In 1897, he joined the leadership of the newly created East Asian Society.

In 1894, he was appointed to the Supreme Court.

In addition to the brief period after 1883, when he participated in the liberal movement, he did not engage in politics, until in 1901 he was unexpectedly named head of government and foreign minister, becoming the first representative of the country's left forces in this post.

As foreign minister, he negotiated the sale of the Danish West Indies . Since this led to a split in the government, he was forced to resign in 1905.

From 1902 to 1913, he was elected to the Danish Parliament, and from 1914 to 1918. was a member of the royal council.

He was one of the founders of the Radical Venstre party , which stood out in 1905 from Venstre .

In 1914, he was appointed a member of the upper house of parliament (landsting), in which he remained until the end of his life.

In 1911, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Oslo Law School.

He was buried in the Bispebjerg cemetery in Copenhagen.
