Biography
Finn Haunstoft was born on July 8, 1928 in the city of Aarhus, Central Jutland . He was engaged in rowing in the Gladsaxe commune in the Skovhuskoloniens canoe club, later he moved to Lyngby and represented the local canoe club of the same name.
The greatest success at the adult international level was achieved in the 1952 season, when he joined the Danish national team and thanks to a series of successful appearances, he won the right to defend the country's honor at the Helsinki Home Summer Olympics . Together with his partner Peder Rasch, he started here in the standings of double canoes at a distance of 1000 meters, qualified from the first place in the preliminary stage and was also the best in the final final race, including overtaking the current world champions and Olympic champions from Czechoslovakia Jan Brzak-Felix and Bogumil Kudrnu , bringing them to the finish line for more than four seconds.
Having become an Olympic champion, Haunstoft remained in the main team of Denmark's rowing team and continued to take part in major international regattas. In particular, in 1956 he successfully passed the selection for the Olympic Games in Melbourne - this time he started in tandem with his partner Aklel Duong in two at a distance of ten kilometers and took the final sixth place, almost two times behind the victorious Soviet crew and Harzian Botev minutes. Soon after the end of these competitions, he decided to end his athlete’s career, having lost his place in the national team to young Danish rowers - during his sports career he became a total of nine times champion of Denmark in various rowing disciplines.
For many years, Finn Haunstoft was a sailor and traveled with his ship to many countries of the world.
He died on May 15, 2008 in the town of Hobro of the commune of the Mariagerfjord at the age of 79 as a result of an accident [1] .
