This-Weir derby ( English Tees – Wear derby ) is a football rivalry between Middlesbrough and Sunderland [1] . The name of the derby comes from the name of the agglomerations of ( Middlesbrough ) and ( Sunderland ). Both clubs are located in Durham , North East England , the distance between the clubs is 26 miles. One of two important derbies for both Middlesbrough and Sunderland, along with the Tyne-Tissa derby and the Tyne-Weir derby against Newcastle United .

The rivalry between the teams intensified in the 1990s, when both teams played in the Premier League, and continued into the 21st century. During matches between teams, clashes between fans regularly occur and many arrests are held [2] [3] . In the 2016/17 season, both clubs play in the Premier League , and for the first time in 7 years, the Tees-Weir derby will be held in the top division [4] .
