Duke of Bailen

Duke de Bailen ( Spanish: Duque de Bailén ) - Spanish noble title. It was created on June 12, 1833 by King Ferdinand VII for the Spanish military commander, Francisco Javier Castagnos and Aragorri (1758-1852), captain-general of the royal army and future mentor of Queen Isabella II .

The name of the ducal title comes from the name of the city of Bailen , the province of Jaen , the autonomous community of Andalusia .

History

Francisco Javier Castagnos distinguished himself during the war, the independence of Spain from the French Empire . In particular, he became famous at the Battle of Bailen in July 1808 , as a result of which he defeated the corps of the French General Dupont , commander-in-chief of the Emperor Napoleon in Spain. After the defeat and surrender of the French under Bailen, King Joseph Bonaparte left Spain.

The Spanish king Ferdinand VII originally granted General Francisco Javier Castagnos the life-long title of Duke de Bailen, but his eldest daughter and successor, Queen Isabella II , made him the hereditary title on May 31, 1847 .
