William Jones published the book Synopsis palmariorum matheseos or, A New Introduction to the Mathematics, Containing the Principles of Arithmetic and Geometry Demonstrated in a Short and Easie Method ... Designed for ... Beginners , in which he suggests using the symbol $\pi$ ${\ displaystyle \ pi}$ ( Greek letter pi ) to indicate the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter ^[1] .

Johann Jacob Scheichzer began the publication in Zurich of his three-volume “Description of the Natural History of Switzerland” about the natural history and geology of Switzerland. ^[3]
Giovanni Battista Morgagni publishes the first volume of Adversaria anatomica , ^[4] in which he describes his observations of human anatomy.
