Born in a large orthodox Jewish family of Marcus Levy, a native of Russia, and German-born Minna Levy, nee Cohen.

He graduated from the University of Edinburgh (1911, Master of Arts with first-class honors). Then he studied at the University of Gottingen, but due to the war he was forced to return to England, where until 1916 he studied at Oxford.

In the years 1916-20. worked at the National Physical Laboratory. Then he became a professor of mathematics at Imperial College London, three years later - a professor, in 1946-55. - Head of the department, since 1954 emerit professor. Also in 1946-52. Dean of the Royal College of Science.

In 1929-33 member of the council and in 1931-2. vice president of the London Mathematical Society.

In 1920-31 He was in the Labor Party , where in 1924-30. headed the science advisory committee, then in 1931 joined the Communist Party , from which he was expelled in 1958. In 1956 he visited Moscow as part of a party delegation. In 1957, he published the book “Jews and the National Question,” which Rajani Palm Dutt condemned as a departure from Marxism.

The author of mathematical works, in particular on aeronautics.

He was married since 1918, three children: a daughter and two sons. Because of the marriage, Levy had a discord with the rest of his relatives, since his wife was a Presbyterian.
