Taxonomy

For the first time, the species was scientifically described in 1997 as Raja koreana and the following year it was isolated as an independent genus [4] . Further studies are needed to clarify the taxonomic status. The generic name comes from the word cor. 홍어 - “slope”. The species name is given by geographical location. The holotype is an adult female 73.5 cm long, caught in the southwestern part of the Korean Sea at at a depth of 30–70 m [5] .

Range

These demersal ramps live off the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula . They are found at a depth of 30 to 180 m [2] .

Description

The broad and flat pectoral fins of these rays form a rhombus-shaped disc. On the ventral side of the disc are 5 gill slits, nostrils and mouth. On the long tail there are lateral folds. These skates have 2 reduced dorsal fins and a reduced caudal fin [1] .

The maximum recorded length is 84 cm [2] .

Biology

Like other rhombic, these stingrays lay eggs enclosed in a rigid horn capsule with protrusions at the ends. Embryos feed exclusively on yolk [3] . Capsule length 11.3 cm, width 4.0 cm [2] .

Human Interaction

These skates are the target fishing target. Caught in by- catch . The meat is eaten. For 15 months (September 2002 - December 2003), no more than 100 skates of this species were found in South Korean fish markets. The data for the assessment of the conservation status of the species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature are insufficient [2] .
