History

Wesleyan University was founded in 1831 by the leaders of the Methodist Church and the citizens of Middeltown . In the first academic year, 48 students of different ages were enrolled, who were taught by three professors and one teacher, the cost of training was $ 36 per year [4] .

The university is named after John Wesley , the founder of the Methodist Church, and is one of the oldest originally Methodist higher education institutions in the United States . This movement played a significant role in the formation of the university and its emphasis on liberal arts training rather than theology . The first president was Willbur Fisk , a well-known teacher of methodologists, who emphasized in his inaugural speech in September 1831 that education serves two purposes: “for the benefit of personal enlightenment and for the good of peace” [4] .

Since its founding, the university has been known for a number of innovations. While American higher education institutions followed the European model of education, highlighting classical studies, President Fisk focused on teaching modern languages, literature, and the natural sciences on an equal footing with the classical program. In 1870, the Judd Hall was built, where the faculty of psychology is now located. This building has become one of the few in the country intended entirely for scientific research [4] .

Initially, exclusively white men were recruited into the ranks of students, but since 1872 co-education was introduced, allowing a limited number of women. Male students reacted negatively to these types of studies and argued that the quality of education is deteriorating in relation to other universities. In 1912, coeducation was closed, but a year earlier, some of the graduates helped found the Connecticut College for Women in New London to fill the void [5] .

The home of Samuel Russell, which houses the Faculty of Philosophy. Since 1970, it is included in the National Register of Historic Places of the United States , and in 2001, the building was declared a national monument of architecture.

In the 20th century, communication with the Methodist church significantly decreased. In 1937, the university became completely independent. Under the leadership of Victor Butterfield, who served as president from 1943 to 1967, interdisciplinary research flourished. The Center for Advanced Studies brought the campus, distinguished scholars and public figures who worked closely with faculty and students. In the 1950s, the College of Literature and the College of Social Sciences were opened [5] .

Since 1960, the university begins to attract African American students. Lecturers, students, and staff at Wesleyan University took an active part in the civil rights movement , and Rev. Martin Luther King visited the Wesleyan campus several times. By 1968, the doors of the school were opened again for women and in 1970, for the first time since 1909, a student was enrolled in the first year. The restoration of coeducation dramatically increased the number of students [4] .

In 1974, the Center for African Studies was formed from the African-American Institute established in 1969. In the fall of 1973, the Arts Center appeared, the building of which was designed by architects Kevin Roch and John Dinkelo. Center for the Study of East Asia. Mansfield Freeman opened in 1987, and in 1998 the Center for the Study of the Countries of the American Continents opened [4] .

From 2000 to January 2005, a campaign was held to raise funds for university needs, and in the end we managed to raise $ 281 million, which went to students and teachers who needed help, as well as to the educational process and updating the campus [4] .
