Sheps, Georg

Georg Sheps ( Georgius Schepss ; German Georg Schepß ; December 25, 1852 , Schweinfurt - September 4, 1897 , Speyer ) is an eminent German philologist and theologian.

Shepsss was born in Schweinfurt , where he graduated from the local gymnasium with honors, here he was greatly influenced as a teacher by the distinguished professor of philosophy Carl Bayer Ainflus ( him Carl Bayer Einfluß ). Sheps studied from 1871 to 1875 at the universities of Erlangen , Munich and Strasbourg classical philology. In Strasbourg, Sheps becomes a student of Wilhelm Studemund . Georg Sheeps received his doctorate in 1875, having defended his thesis on the topic "de soloecismo" ( Solecism ). After passing the state exam, Sheps worked from autumn 1875 to September 1876 as an assistant at the gymnasium in Ansbach ; from October 1876, he is a teacher in the Latin school (gymnasium) of Dinkelsbühl in the Bavarian Middle Franconia . In the spring of 1880, Sheps was transferred as a schoolteacher to the high school of Würzburg , where he died in 1897. Sheps issued on behalf of the Vienna Academy of the philosophical writings of Boethius . In the Würzburg library he managed to find interesting handwritten materials from the history of the University of Würzburg (“Magistri Petri Poponis Colloquia de scholis Herbipolensibus”, 1882; “Die Gedichte des Magisters Petrus Popon”, 1884), as well as unknown until that time works of the heretic of Priscillian , IV century ("Priscillian, ein neuaufgefundener lat. Schriftsteller des IV Jahrh.", 1886; Priscillian edition, V., 1889; "Notiz zu Pr.", 1890; "Pro Priscilliano", 1894). Of the other works of Shepss, the “Die ältesten Evangelienhandschriften der Würzburger Universitätsbibliothek” (1887) stands out; Conradi Hirsaugiensis dialogus super auctores sive Didascalon (1889); “Aus lat.
