Origin
Rhode Dudley is the youngest branch of the English kind of Sutton , who ascended to Hervé de Sutton, the first feudal baron Sutton-on-Trent [1] , a descendant of the Bretons from the unit Alain Red , who participated in the Norman Conquest of England. One of his descendants, inherited through marriage Dudley's castle, and in 1342 was summoned to the English parliament as the 1st Baron Sutton from Dudley, but his closest descendants are not mentioned in sources with a baronial title. Only his great-great-grandson, , the 5th Baron Sutton of Dudley, a diplomat and adviser to King Henry VI , in 1340 was made the 1st Baron Dudley . He had several sons. From the eldest son, Edward, the eldest branch of the Suttons, barons Dudley, went. The second son, John Sutton, who took the generic nickname Dudley of Etherington, became the founder of the Dudley clan.
History
The rise of the clan began with Edmund Dudley (c. 1462 - August 18, 1510), the son of the founder, an English statesman during the reign of Henry VII . He was illegible in the means to fill the state treasury. After the death of Henry VII, his son, Henry VIII, accused Edmund of high treason and executed.
Edmund left three sons. Of these, the most powerful achieved senior, John (1502 - August 22, 1553). He managed to win the favor of King Henry VIII, so that in 1542 he became Lord Admiral , and he was also given the title of , who was owned by his mother. After the death of Henry VIII in 1547, John joined the Regency Council in the minor Edward VI , received the title of Count Warwick , and in 1551 - Duke of Northumberland . The title of Count Warwick passed to his eldest surviving sons, John . After the overthrow of Duke Somerset , the main rival of John, in 1552, he began to enjoy unlimited influence on the young king. At the insistence of John, Edward VI introduced to the number of the heirs of Lady Jane Gray , which Dudley married his son Guilford . After the death of Edward VI in 1553, John proclaimed Queen Jane Gray, but she was overthrown by Mary Tudor , the eldest sister of the late King. John was executed, and his five sons and Jane Gray were imprisoned in the Tower. In February 1554, Guilford Dudley and Jane Gray were also executed. Dudley’s titles and possessions were confiscated.
The four sons of John — John, Ambrose , Robert, and Henry — by the efforts of their mother and their son-in-law, released in October 1554. John soon died. Ambrose, Robert and Henry in 1557 received personal contingent for the battles for the King of Spain Philip II , the husband of Queen Mary. They participated in the Battle of Saint-Quentin , during which Henry was killed. For their services to the crown, Ambrose and Robert were reinstated in a parliamentary act in 1558.
After the death of Queen Mary, her sister Elizabeth , in love with Robert Dudley, ascended the English throne. She brought the surviving children of the Duke of Northumberland closer to her. Ambrose in 1561 received the titles of Count Warwick and Baron Lyle , and Robert, who was a favorite of the Queen for a long time, in 1564 received the title of Count Leicester . Ambrose Dudley was also in 1562 returned most of the confiscated possessions of his father. However, neither Ambrose nor Robert left legitimate heirs. After the death of Ambrose in 1590, this branch of the genus died away.
Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, is left with the illegitimate son (c. 1574 - September 6, 1649), an English traveler and cartographer. He inherited most of his father’s property, and in 1603–1605 he unsuccessfully tried to gain recognition of his legitimacy, claiming that his parents were secretly married. After that, he left England and settled in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany . There he called himself Earl Warwick and Lester. Later, he also called himself the Duke of Northumberland, this title was recognized by him as Emperor Ferdinand II . Robert has left numerous offspring in Italy, but this branch has died down through the male line after three generations.
There were other lines of the kind. One went from Simon Dudley from Elmley Lovat (1505–1555), one of the sons of Edmund Dudley. This branch died away in the nineteenth century. The descendants of Thomas Dudley from Clapton (d. 1369), the younger brother of John Sutton III , 2nd Baron Sutton from Dudley, also wore the generic nickname Dudley. One of his descendants, Sir William Dudley (c. 1597 - September 18, 1670) received the title of baronet Dudley from Clapton. This branch died away in 1764 after the death of William Dudley, 3rd Baronet Dudley from Clampton.

Comments
- ↑ In 1604/1605, supporting the claims of her son Robert Dudley to the inheritance of Count Leicester, she stated that in 1573 she secretly married Robert Lester. However, the Star Chamber rejected these claims. In the XIX century, the question of the legitimacy of Robert Dudley was raised again in the House of Lords, but no decision was taken [2] . The opinions of historians on this issue are divided. Derek Wilson [3] believes that the marriage was concluded, but other historians consider the evidence of marriage to be unconvincing.
