History

1802-1917

In 1802, after Poltava became the administrative center of the Poltava province, the creation of the Poltava city garden began according to the sketch of the architect M. A. Amvrosimov . In 1803, the territory of the city garden was surrounded by a fence, later on in the park there were equipped benches, gazebos and even several fireplaces “for heating the public” [1] .

In 1820, the Poltava School of Horticulture was opened in the garden (which operated until the end of 1841 and made a significant contribution to the development of the garden), a greenhouse was built, and ponds were equipped along the slope in the lower part of the park. At the same time, fruit trees and grapes were planted on the site of the earthen ramparts of the Poltava fortress [1] .

In 1852, a wooden building of the Poltava City Theater was built in the city garden [1] .

In the second half of the 19th century, a “restaurant for selling permitted items”, booths for selling ice cream and confectionery, and a “ coffee house ” were opened in the park [1] .

On May 9, 1861, a dinner was held in the park in memory of T. G. Shevchenko , in which 200 people took part [1] .

On July 17, 1877, festivities were held in the park in honor of the liberation of the ancient capital of Bulgaria, the city of Tarnovo , by Russian troops and fundraising was organized to assist the Bulgarian people, 1,150 rubles were collected during the day [1] .

1918-1991

During the Civil War, the park fell into disrepair, but on April 25, 1920, the first mass citywide subbotnik was held and the restoration of the city began. In the future, the restored park received a new name - the park named after Ivan Franko - and was officially opened for visiting [1] .

In the 1920s and 1930s, the park was the venue for citywide celebrations and special events, and concerts of the symphony orchestra and agricultural exhibitions were also held here [1] .

On August 29, 1936, the park was transferred from the Old City Cemetery and the ashes of the writer V. G. Korolenko were reburied, in 1940 his wife was buried next to him.

After the start of the Great Patriotic War, the park became the place of military training of the Poltava people's militia and the venue for several anti-fascist rallies (at which Wanda Vasilevskaya and writer Alexander Korneychuk spoke). In 1941-1943, the park suffered during the fighting and was seriously destroyed during the German occupation of the city ​​(almost all trees were cut down and burned at that time), but new trees were planted here in the first post-war spring. The restored park received a new name - Victory Park [1] .

In 1959, in the park near the billiard room, a steel tower was built for parachuting (jumping from which they made until 1966) [2] .

In the early 1960s, a Li-2 aircraft was mounted on metal supports near the Romashka attraction [2] , a children's cinema was equipped in it, and films for children were screened [1] .

In 1962, a grave made of pink granite monolith with a bronze bas-relief was installed on the grave of V. G. Korolenko [1] .

In 1970, the park received the status of a monument of landscape gardening art .

In July 1987, on the territory of the park, the II Republican folk art festival was held on the Singing Field, later on, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the October Revolution in November 1987, a stage with a proscenium and benches for the audience located in the amphitheater was built on the Singing Field [1] .

As of the beginning of 1989, the Victory Park was the largest of the parks and squares of Poltava - its territory was 47 hectares. After 1991
