Club career
Preston North End
He spent his youth career at the Preston North End Club. There he made his debut on a professional level: on August 30, 1960 against the London Arsenal . In February 1962, Preston defeated Liverpool in the second replay, and Thompson scored the winning goal. Then he was noticed by the head coach of Liverpool, Bill Shankly , and in 1963 acquired Thompson for himself for £ 37,000.
Liverpool
In Liverpool, Thompson played as a left winger . Many teams envied Liverpool, which had such powerful players as Thompson and Callaghan on the attack flanks. In his first season, Thompson played in all 42 league games and helped the club become the champion of England. The following season he won the FA Cup . In the 1965/66 season, he again became the champion of the national league.
In the 1970/71 FA Cup final against Arsenal in the 68th minute, Thompson replaced Alun Evans . The match in regular time ended with the score 0-0. In the 2nd minute of the first extra half he gave an assist to Steve Highway , but this did not help the club win the trophy. Problems with the knee made Thompson think about ending his career. In December 1973, the Bolton Wanderers club persuaded him to lease it.
Bolton Wanderers
A month after the lease, Thompson signed a contract with Bolton for £ 18,000. He ended his career in April 1978 after 132 matches played for the "trotters."
Team Career
The debut for the national team of England took place on May 17, 1964 in a friendly match against the Portuguese national team . He was included in the composition at the European Championship 1968 in Italy , in which the British took third place. In total, Thompson spent 16 matches for the national team.
