The original title of the film is a phrase from the book of the prophet Jeremiah (“The Human Heart is Most Cunning” Jer. 17: 9). Film critic Boris Ivanov described the name given to the film at the Russian box office as cynical and offensive. [one]
Story
Prostitute and drug addict Sarah is seeking her 6-year-old son Jeremiah to be given to her, taking her from foster parents. On the first day, Jeremiah runs away, but the police return him to his mother. Sarah convinces him that his adoptive parents abandoned him, and when he calls the police again, he is crucified on the cross. Jeremiah agrees to stay with her.
In the next few months, he travels with Sarah, who is engaged in prostitution, uses alcohol and drugs. Sarah marries one of the clients and they go on a honeymoon, leaving Jeremiah for two days in the house with almost no food. The client returns, informing Jeremiah that Sarah stole his money and escaped. At night, he rapes the boy, takes him out onto the road and leaves him. Jeremiah is found and brought to the hospital, where his grandmother, Sarah's mother, takes him.
The next three years he spends in the house of his grandfather, a religious person who raises children, forcing him to read the Bible and learn psalms. Jeremiah finds out that Sarah escaped from the family. Once, when Jeremiah handed out religious leaflets on the street, Sarah finds him and takes him with him.
Since the boy has long hair, Sarah now calls him sister, introducing herself to her casual sexual partners. Jeremiah dressed in his mother’s female clothes and began to flirt with her next partner.
Then Sarah and Jeremiah live in the house of a man who has an underground drug laboratory in the basement. After the explosion of the laboratory, they leave from there. Sarah begins to have problems with her mental state. She dyes the hair for herself and her son so that the police do not recognize them. Jeremiah eats scraps from the garbage can, and Sarah says they are poisoned. Jeremiah asks her for an antidote, having drunk the liquid that Sarah gave him, he faints. Waking up the next day, he again drinks the liquid and realizes that his mother gave him poison. Entering the cafe, Jeremiah again loses consciousness.
Jeremiah comes to life in a hospital next to her grandmother. That same night, Sarah comes for him and takes him away with him while his grandmother is sleeping. Sarah and Jeremiah drive away.
Cruel animated inserts showing the boy's perception of current events were performed by American artist and animator Christian Sedzawski .
