Metaweb Technologies

Metaweb Technologies, Inc. - An American company from San Francisco that developed Freebase . described as “open, accessible to all database of knowledge of the whole world”. It was founded by Robert Cook [1] and Danny Hillis in 2005 and worked non-publicly until 2007. Metaweb was acquired by Google in 2010. [1] In 2016, Google closed Freebase , transferring all its data to Wikidata . [2] [3] Although Metaweb is no longer a separate corporation, Freebase and its associated website freebase.com continue to operate under the CC-BY license established by Metaweb.

Funding

March 14, 2006. Metaweb received $ 15 million in funding. Investors were Benchmark Capital , Millennium Technology Ventures and Omidyar Network . [4] On January 15, 2008, Metaweb announced a second round of financing in the amount of $ 42.5 million, which was conducted with the participation of Goldman Sachs and Benchmark Capital. [five]

Kevin Harvey of Benchmark Capital was a member of the Board of Directors of Metaweb.

Acquisition

July 16, 2010 Google acquires Metaweb. The amount of the transaction is not disclosed. [6]
