Biography
The son of a farmer, his ancestors in the XIX century moved to Australia from Scotland . He grew up on his grandfather's dairy farm. He studied at the Faculty of Philology of the University of Sydney , became a professional translator, translated scientific and technical literature. In the mid-1960s, he worked as a translator at Australian National University. Since 1969, he was completely engaged in literature, published a magazine, worked as an editor.
Creativity
Murray's poetry is deeply connected with the nature and everyday life of Australia, the worldview of its first settlers, the early literature of the continent.
Recognition
Officer of the Order of Australia. Laureate of the Petrarch Prize (1995), T. S. Eliot Prize ( 1996 ), awarded the Royal Gold Medal for Poetry ( 1999 ). Honorary Doctor of Sterling (1992) and St. Andrews (2011) Universities.
One of the most respected contemporary poets in the English world. His work was highly appreciated by Joseph Brodsky , Sheimas Heaney , Derek Walcott . Murray's poems came in separate editions translated into Hindi, German, Italian, Spanish, Catalan, Dutch, Norwegian, Danish, Swedish and Russian.
