The earthquake in Central Italy occurred on August 24, 2016 at 03:36 local time (01:36 UTC ) near the city ​​of Norcia , 75 km southeast of Perugia , 45 km north of the city ​​of L'Aquila and 116 km to northeast of Rome [1] . This earthquake is the largest disaster in the history of the country since 2009 [10] (the year when the earthquake occurred in the region of L'Aquila in Abruzzo , which killed more than 300 people).

August 27 is declared the day of national mourning for the victims of the earthquake [11] .
