History
The old Rock City has existed in Rio de Janeiro since the mid-1980s. Created for the 1985 Rock and Rio International Rock Festival, it also hosted the Rock and Rio 3 festival in 2001. Capacity for up to 250,000 spectators.
For the 2007 Pan American Games , the Rock City Sports Complex ( Complexo Esportivo Cidade do Rock ) was built in its place, consisting of two temporary stadiums for baseball (3,000 spectators) and softball (2,000 spectators) [1] . The structures were badly damaged during heavy rains, so they had to abandon the competition [2] .
In place of the old "Rock City" is now the Olympic Village of the Summer Olympic Games 2016 [3] .
Modern Rock City
The new "Rock City" is located northeast of the old one - near the Rio Centro exhibition center. Construction began in 2010, completed a year later. The festivals “Rock in Rio 4” (2011), “Rock in Rio 5” (2013) and “Rock in Rio 6” (2015) [4] [5] were held in it .
During the 2016 Olympic Games, the new “Rock City” (“Athletes Park”) became a recreation area for spectators and delegations. There is a tennis court , a climbing wall, a playground, an ice rink, changing rooms with showers, a bicycle path of 1,420 m.
